Best Surf Season (October - March)
Porto Katsiki lives and dies by the Mediterranean storm track. The SSW-facing bight is an excellent target for S/SW swell, but it sits in a sea that generates much of its energy as short-period windswell. From October to March, average swell heights run at the top of the annual cycle and the S/SSW/SW window is loaded with energy. These are the months when cold fronts and deep Mediterranean cyclones swing from the Gulf of Lion into the Ionian, sending pulses of swell against the cliffs. The prevailing NW windswell is far from perfect, but with N/NNE/NE/NNW offshore flows present 17-20% of the time, there are enough clean windows to make the winter chase worthwhile.
Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)
April, May and September make up the shoulder season. The ocean still offers occasional windows of 2-3ft (0.6-0.9m) surf, especially in May and September when early or late synoptic storms disrupt the seasonal airflow. However, the average wave period sits at 4.3-4.9s, meaning the surf is usually soft and lumpy. Dedicated surfers can score, but the consistency is nowhere near winter.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
June through August is the low surf season. The S/SW energy supply nearly disappears, dropping to between 3% and 11% of the directional wave rose, while NW and WNW windswell dominates under the Meltemi regime. Porto Katsiki is best saved for boots-off beach days in these months; only a rare Medicane or surprising southerly storm can generate rideable waves.
