Best Surf Season (November - February)
The Mediterranean winter is the engine room for Vouliagmeni. As cold fronts and Genoa lows traverse the basin, the south-facing shoreline of the Saronic Gulf receives the most consistent SSW-to-SSE swell of the year. The statistics show average wave heights peaking around 0.9m (3ft) through December and January, with the favourable S/SSW/SSE/SE sector still producing a healthy share of 1-1.5m (3-5ft) waves and occasional 2m-plus sets. Winds blow from the offshore N/NNE/NW/NNW quadrant roughly half the time, so the setup is far better than the rest of the year. Still, the average wave period hovers around just 5s, so quality is often short-period and lumpy; the classic Vouliagmeni day comes when a deep low in the Ionian or Libyan Sea sends 8-10s SSW swell while a crisp northerly keeps the surface clean.
Fair Surf Season (March - April & September - October)
These shoulder months are the trade-off windows. March and April still inherit winter storm tracks, but average swell heights drop to 0.6-0.8m (2-3ft) and periods fall to 4.5-4.9s. The favourable S/SSW sector is often present but mostly under 1m, delivering grovelling waves. September and October mark the reverse transition: the Meltemi fades, water temperatures remain warm, and the first autumn lows start pushing new SSW energy into the gulf. The percentage of ideal wind rises to 20-22%, but consistency is the challenge; these months offer occasional fun sessions rather than sustained swell.
Low Surf Season (May - August)
Summer is the flat season. With the Etesian wind regime locked in, the average swell height collapses to 0.4-0.5m (1.3-1.6ft) and periods drop below 4.5s. The wave rose is dominated by NNE windswell generated by the Meltemi, which does not break with any quality on a south-facing beach. Favourable SSE/S/SSW energy dwindles to a tiny percentage, almost exclusively in the sub-half-metre class. Add air temperatures of 25-27°C, water up to 26.6°C and very little rain, and you get beautiful beach days but very little surf. Unless a rare summer storm or southerly pulse appears, boards are best left in the van.
