Best Surf Season (October - March)
The North Atlantic roars to life in October and Sandvik sits right in the firing line. Average swells run from 5-6ft (1.5-1.8m) in October to a powerful 7-8ft (2.1-2.5m) through the heart of winter, with periods in the 10-12s range. The dominant WSW, SW and SSW swell directions are exactly what this west-southwest facing spot needs to light up. The challenge is wind: ideal offshore flow from the NE through E quadrant is only present around 9-16% of the time, but when a post-frontal NE wind lines up with a mid-Atlantic groundswell, Sandvik turns into a serious, hollow Icelandic wave. Positive NAO phases juice the storm track and send more W/SW swell; negative phases can lock in colder, drier offshore flow but often at the expense of size. Either way, winter is the main event here.
Fair Surf Season (April, May, September)
The shoulder months trade some of that winter juice for better odds of clean conditions. April and September still average around 5-6ft (1.5-1.8m) of swell, while May settles closer to 4ft (1.3m) with a shorter 9.1s period. Ideal offshore wind jumps to 14-18% of the time, making these months the most user-friendly for actually finding smooth, rippable waves. Water temperatures sit between 6-10°C, precipitation is lower, and the lighter spring and autumn wind regimes can turn average swell into genuinely fun sessions at Sandvik.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is the quiet season for this exposed Icelandic beach. Average swell heights drop to just 3-4ft (1.0-1.3m), periods shorten to 8-9s, and the mix becomes more windswell than true groundswell. The SW/SSW swell still dominates the rose, but the energy is mostly small and short-period, struggling to build any real power. Ideal offshore winds hover around 17%, but the smaller Atlantic doesn't give Sandvik enough to work with. It is a fun time for longboards and small-wave cruising under the midnight sun, but serious surfers will be watching the autumn forecast.
