Alwars seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (December - February)
The northeast monsoon is the engine that drives Alwars. From December through February, the Bay of Bengal fills with a steady stream of NNE, NE, ENE and E swell, giving this east-northeast-facing beach its most consistent waves of the year. Average wave heights hold around 3ft (0.9-1m), with periods of 7-9s, producing a punchy, rideable mixture of windswell and short-period groundswell. The trade-off is a persistent NNE/NE onshore wind that often chops up the surface. The real winners are the surfers who hunt dawn windows and time the brief offshore swings from the W/SW quadrant.
Fair Surf Season (March - April and October - November)
These shoulder months are the transition zones between India's two monsoons. Offshore SSW/SW/WSW winds become more common, and ideal-wind percentages rise well above the winter values, reaching 51% in April. The problem is a dramatic shift in swell direction: S and SSW replace the NE/ENE window, and most of the long-period energy arriving during these months is wrongly aligned for Alwars. Still, when late-season pulses of NE/ENE swell overlap with light offshore winds, the spot can turn on for a few clean sessions.
Low Surf Season (May - September)
The southwest monsoon dominates from May through September. Winds are predominantly WSW and SW - offshore at Alwars - so the ocean is often clean, but the swell direction is overwhelmingly from S and SSW, which is the worst possible alignment for this east-northeast-facing coastline. Despite average heights of 3-3.5ft (1-1.1m) and long 10-11s periods, very little of that energy actually reaches the break with any form. Expect summer rain, warm water, and a lot of time spent watching the cams from the beach.
