Best Surf Season (November - March)
The year at Gokarna is a battle between the northeast and southwest monsoons. Once the northeast monsoon takes hold from November through March, high pressure over the Asian continent funnels offshore winds from the NE/ENE/E/ESE quadrant across this west-facing stretch of Indian coastline. That, combined with groundswell in the WSW-to-NW window, sets up the most consistently rideable surf of the year. Swell heights are typically in the 2-3ft (0.6-0.9m) range, not especially big but clean, lined-up and fun-sized, with ideal offshore wind days running from 32 to 54% depending on the month. Water temperatures hover near 28 degrees C and rainfall is minimal, making this the most dependable season for quality surf.
Fair Surf Season (April - May and September - October)
April and May see a serious surge in southwesterly groundswell as the ocean warms and the southwest monsoon begins to build across the Arabian Sea. Swell heights and periods become more powerful, but the same synoptic pattern drags onshore W/SW winds across Gokarna, dropping ideal wind percentages to between 5 and 10% and putting a messy chop on what would otherwise be pumping surf. September and October are the mirror image: the monsoon is retreating, the WSW/W swell is still very much alive, and by October offshore winds return 36% of the time. Expect mixed quality and transitional conditions during these shoulder months, with the best windows arriving in October.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
June through August is the heart of the southwest monsoon and the low point for surf quality at Gokarna. The Arabian Sea becomes a massive swell machine, producing average wave heights between 6.6 and 7.9ft (2.0-2.4m) from the WSW and W directions, with plenty of walls in the 6-8ft (1.8-2.4m) class and occasional bombs overhead. The fatal flaw is the wind: the same southwest monsoon flow that generates those waves blows directly onshore, often at 20-40kph, accompanied by torrential daily rain of 18-25mm. Ideal wind days plummet to near zero, turning Gokarna into a heavy, lumpy, often unsurfable mess. Only a rare easing of the monsoon wind can open a brief window, but the statistics say you should look elsewhere if you want clean surf.
