Best Surf Season (October - February)
Puri's most consistent surf arrives with the northeast monsoon, when a cold high-pressure ridge over northern India funnels offshore winds from the N/NNE/NW sectors across the SSE-facing beach. October and November see ideal wind 42-56 percent of the time and periods in the 10.7-11.0s range, while December and January stay clean, dry and long-period. February is the tail end, with more S swell but wind quality beginning to fade. It is mostly longboard territory, but the quality and reliability are unmatched.
Fair Surf Season (March & September)
March and September are transitional. March sees the first real size jump from S/SSW swell, with 3-5ft (0.9-1.5m) potential, but SSW/SW winds blow most of the time and ideal wind collapses to 5 percent. September is the mirror image: the monsoon is retreating, 10.3s S swell is still strong at 1.2m (4ft), and ideal wind improves to 20 percent, producing the first clean sessions after the wet season. Both months require patience, early starts and a keen eye on the wind map.
Low Surf Season (April - August)
From April through August, the southwest monsoon puts Puri squarely in the low-quality bracket. The swell is actually the largest of the year, averaging 1.2-1.5m (4-5ft), and the direction remains south/southwest - ideal for the beach - but the accompanying wind is almost always onshore. SSW/SW wind dominates with frequencies of 60 percent or more in April and May, while ideal offshore wind languishes between 2 and 12 percent. The result is pulsing, rain-soaked, wind-blown surf, with only rare August windows when monsoon breaks allow N/NW land breezes to tidy up the lines.
