Vizag seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (October - February)

When the northeast monsoon settles over the Bay of Bengal, Vizag's south-southeast-facing sandbars start to work. Swell energy from the ESE, SE, SSE and S directions continues to push in, but now the prevailing winds shift to the N, WNW, NW and NNW - true offshore flow for this stretch of coast. October and November are the standouts, with average surf in the 3-4ft (0.9-1.2m) range, periods around 8.5-9.5s and favourable wind 54-62% of the time. December and January stay clean but a little smaller, while February offers slightly longer period but fewer clean wind windows.

Fair Surf Season (March & September)

March and September are the transition months. March is the pre-monsoon switch: S and SSW swell fills in to around 3ft (0.9m), but southwesterly sea breezes and early monsoon flow cut the favourable wind percentage down to 11%, leaving only occasional dawn-patrol windows. September is the more promising shoulder month, because the tail end of the southwest monsoon brings stronger S/SSW groundswell in the 4-5ft (1.2-1.5m) range with periods pushing 9.7s, while the first N/NW offshore pulses of the northeast monsoon start to return. These months reward surfers who can wait for a wind shift.

Low Surf Season (April - August)

April through August is the annual grind. The southwest monsoon and pre-monsoon southwesterlies lock in onshore flow from SSW, SW and WSW, while the swell - actually plentiful at 4-6ft (1.2-1.8m) - comes almost exclusively from S and SSW. That combination produces powerful, lumpy, sectiony surf. April and May are the hardest with ideal wind sitting at 4-6%, and June and July bring even more size and rain but no real relief. August is the 'least bad' of the deep monsoon months, with ideal wind up to 23% and marginally longer period, but it remains a low-quality, high-effort season. Still, a well-timed northerly wind event can turn the raw S/SSW swell into some heavy, sandbar-hopping waves.
