Canggu seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (April - September)

Canggu's west-facing coastline truly comes alive during the dry season, when the Southern Ocean becomes a powerful groundswell generator. Average wave heights climb to 1.9-2.2m (6-7.2ft) and periods stretch into the 14-second range, delivering powerful, long-period energy from the S/SSW/SW - exactly the directions this beach needs. The wind also shifts from the winter muck to a consistent ESE/SE trade flow, which for this SW-facing shore is a clean, cross-shore breeze that keeps the faces open. This is the window where Canggu sees its most consistent combination of size and quality, making it the prime season for surfers wanting reliable, rippable waves.

Fair Surf Season (March, October, November)

The shoulder months offer a taste of the dry season but require a bit more patience. March and October still see plenty of SSW/SW groundswell, with averages around 1.6-1.8m (5-6ft) and periods of 13-13.5s, but the trade winds are not yet fully established or start to weaken, leading to more variable sea breezes. November marks the arrival of the northwest monsoon, yet the swell direction remains incredibly SSW-dominated; there are still good days if you can find the right wind window. These months reward the flexible surfer - score it right and you'll find fun, punchy waves, but you'll have to wait out some less favorable conditions.

Low Surf Season (December - February)

The core of the wet season is the toughest time to surf Canggu. While the Southern Ocean still sends swell (averaging 1.6-1.7m / 5-5.6ft) and the direction is mostly good, the wind patterns fall apart. W and WNW winds dominate, with WSW blowing directly onshore, turning the lineup into a lumpy, cross-chop mess. The 'ideal wind' statistic drops to a mere 19-26% for these months, meaning most days are blown out. Occasional offshore N/NE winds do appear, usually clearing the air for a few hours, and when they do, the waves can be surprisingly good - but consistency is not on your side. If you're planning a surf trip focused on quality, this is the season to avoid.
