Best Surf Season (April - May, September - November)
The Indonesian dry season stabilizes the atmosphere and strips away the onshore monsoon winds, revealing Impossibles' true potential. With the Indian Ocean storm track firing long-period SSW-SW groundswell at high volumes, April, May, September, October and November deliver the finest balance of size and cleanliness. Ideal offshore (SSW-SW) wind frequency climbs to 61-88%, while average wave heights hold in the 5-6.5ft (1.6-2m) range and swell periods stretch 13.2-14.1s. This is the window when the reef stands up as the long-period, powerful swell lines wrap the corner and unload down the racetrack.
Fair Surf Season (March, June - August, December)
The core of the dry season (June-August) brings the heaviest groundswell of the year-averaging 7ft (2.1-2.2m) at 14.3-14.4s-but the strengthening southeast trade winds drop ideal wind percentages to 39-50%, keeping wave faces bumpy. March and December are transition months: March still benefits from long-period energy and the last of the wet-season rain, while December marks the onset of the northwest monsoon, with wind quality crashing to just 34%. Size is always there, but consistency and clean grooming become the question.
Low Surf Season (January - February)
January and February sit squarely in the heart of the wet season. The average swell remains a solid 5.5ft (1.7m) at 12.4-12.5s, but the northwest monsoon clocks in with onshore W/WNW winds more than 50% of the time, giving an ideal wind frequency of only 20-23%. Heavy rainfall and stormy skies accompany the onshore conditions, making for washed-out, lumpy waves. It remains surfable, but Impossibles is well off its A-game in these two months.
