Lakey Peak seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (April - September)
The most consistent surf at Lakey Peak arrives when the southeast monsoon locks in across Indonesia. From April through September, the Australian winter high pressure ridge sits firmly to the south, driving steady E/ESE/SE trade winds straight offshore at this west-facing beach. At the same time, the Southern Ocean storm track is at its most active, launching long-period SSW/SW groundswell into the exposed reefs. Average wave heights climb from 4ft (1.3m) in April to a peak of 6ft (1.8m) in July, with periods of 13.9-14.5s. Clean, offshore wind is present 79-96% of the time, making wave quality by far the best of the year.
Fair Surf Season (March, October - November)
The shoulder months mark the transition between monsoons. March and October can deliver excellent waves - March holds onto late wet-season SW swell with a 13.5s period, while October still sees plenty of SSW/SW groundswell and 70% offshore wind. However, the wind fields become more variable as the monsoon trough drifts. November in particular is a coin flip: good SSW/SW swell lines but only 53% clean wind, with the southwest monsoon slowly regaining control and rain increasing.
Low Surf Season (December - February)
The northwest monsoon is the enemy of wave quality at Lakey Peak. From December through February, the prevailing winds shift to the W, WNW and NW - a directly onshore flow for the west-facing point. Swell still arrives from the SW, averaging 4ft (1.3-1.4m) with 12.8-12.9s periods, but the surface is frequently blown out. Only 10-19% of the time does the wind align offshore, and heavy tropical rainfall (7mm/day) adds to the frustration. It is a winter of windows, not waves.
