Best Surf Season (April - November)
Turtles is a west-facing setup that lives and dies by the Indonesian monsoon pendulum. During the southeast monsoon, the Australian winter high pressure system pumps consistent easterly to southeasterly trade winds across the Indian Ocean, setting up clean offshore conditions for the west-facing break. At the same time, long-period southerly and south-southwesterly groundswell from storms in the Southern Ocean and the deep Indian Ocean fills the bay, producing average wave heights of 1.6-2.2m (5.2-7.2ft) with periods in the powerful 12-14s range. This is the gold standard: April through November delivers the highest percentage of ideal surf windows, with May, June and October topping 70 percent. Expect offshore dawnies, glassy walls and consistent sets.
Fair Surf Season (March & December)
The transition months between monsoons are a game of patience. March and December still see solid SSW and SW swell (often 1.5-2m / 5-6.6ft), but the wind is a crapshoot as the monsoon trough migrates. NW and WNW onshore flows battle the dying or rising southeast trades, keeping the surf rideable but often bumpy. For surfers willing to pick the windows, these months can offer hidden gems - clean early mornings, lighter winds and punchy groundswell before the weather shifts.
Low Surf Season (January - February)
The northwest monsoon has full control in January and February. While the swell direction is actually favorable - SSW and SW dominate - the persistent NW and WNW winds are directly onshore for the west-facing beach, ruining wave quality. Ideal surf conditions drop to just 16-17 percent of the time. The surf is often full, lumpy and closed-out, with heavy rain and warm 28.8-28.9°C water. This is the season to save your energy or look for sheltered nooks, not the Turtles you came for.
