Inch Reef seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (October - March)

Inch Reef is an open window to the North Atlantic, and when the cold months set in the ocean around the Dingle Peninsula completely changes character. As the polar front migrates south and the NAO swings into its positive phase, extratropical cyclones stack up across the North Atlantic like a conveyor belt, generating long-period groundswell with average wave heights climbing to 4.6-6.2ft (1.4-1.9m) and periods pushing 12-13 seconds. The majority of the swell energy arrives from W to WNW, wrapping into the SSW-facing reef at an angle, while true SW and WSW swells are the standout days when the lines line up clean and the reef really starts to throw. Offshore north winds are most common behind passing cold fronts, so although the ideal wind window sits at just 20-26 percent, the payoff is heavy, powerful surf and some seriously memorable sessions.

Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)

Spring and early autumn are transitional seasons at Inch Reef. The Azores High starts to push north in April, shutting down the most aggressive storm tracks and dropping average wave heights back to 3.3-4ft (1.0-1.2m). Periods hover near 10 seconds, so the surf remains rideable and occasionally punchy, but it lacks the full-throttle power of winter. The silver lining is a jump in clean offshore days, especially in April when NNW flow reaches nearly 12 percent and ideal wind windows expand to 27-35 percent. September marks the return of Atlantic energy as the first autumn lows bring renewed 4ft (1.2m) swell and the water temperature still holds at a pleasant 15.8°C.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer is the slow season at Inch Reef. High pressure settles over the eastern Atlantic and the mean swell drops to just 3ft (0.9-1.0m), with periods down at 8.8-9.2 seconds. The dominant W/WNW swell is supplemented by steady SW-WSW breezes that put a chop on the surface and make it difficult for the exposed reef to hold shape. That said, summer is not completely flat; the bay picks up pulses of windswell and occasional remnants of distant Atlantic lows. Clean, fun-size waves are possible when early-morning NW winds line up with small NW groundswell, but expect a grovel board and a thicker wetsuit even in August.
