Best Surf Season (October - March)

Mullaghmore Head is a different animal once autumn lows start stacking up across the North Atlantic. From October through March the average swell rises from 4ft (1.3m) to a solid 6ft (1.8m), and periods routinely push past 11-12 seconds. These are long-period, powerful groundswells generated by intense extratropical storms along the Atlantic storm track, often fed by a strongly negative NAO that steers low pressure toward Ireland. When the wind angles from the S/SW quadrant, the north-facing arena at Mullaghmore lights up; the best sessions arrive as NW/NNW swell wraps into the bay under offshore S/SSW/SW winds, setting up the kind of big, grinding reef waves this stretch of the Sligo coast is known for. Conditions can be wild, cold and rainy, but the reward is big, consistent, and often epic.
