Portsalon seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
The North Atlantic storm machine switches on in October, and Portsalon's raw swell numbers respond quickly. By December, January and February, average swell heights push into the 3.0-3.2m (10-10.5ft) range with periods of 12-12.4s. This is the only time of year when long-period, powerful groundswell sits off the Donegal coast. Although the deep-water wave rose is dominated by W and WNW swells, this NE-facing sand is best served by the NNE through E swell windows. Those windows are most likely to open when the NAO goes negative and Atlantic lows track further south, sending cleaner E-NE pulses across the eastern Atlantic. Be prepared for cold water (7.9-9.6°C), brisk air and ideal offshore SSW-W winds just 25-27% of the time. When the pieces align, Portsalon is heavy, powerful and very much alive.
Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)
April and September offer a balance: average swell heights sit around 2.0m (6.6ft), periods hold near 10-10.5s, and ideal offshore wind frequencies rise to 29-34%. The NNE-E window is relatively more common in April, while September sees the first fresh autumn groundswells. Waves are still punchy and rippable, water temps are more forgiving (9.4 to 15.1°C), and the lighter winds make conditions more user friendly. This is the classic shoulder season - slightly thinner wetsuits, fewer crowds, and plenty of clean mid-period surf.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
June through August is the summer lull at Portsalon. Average swell heights drop to 1.4-1.5m (4.6-4.9ft), average periods fall to 8.6-8.9s, and the percentage of genuine NNE-E swell becomes very small. That said, summer offers the best wind statistics of the year - ideal offshore conditions 32-39% of the time - and the warmest water (up to 16.1°C). The waves that do arrive are usually clean and small, often fun-sized and longboard friendly, but rarely powerful or hollow. It is a low season in terms of height and energy, not necessarily in terms of enjoyable, glassy surf.
