Streedagh Strand seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
The North Atlantic is the engine that drives Streedagh Strand, and when the autumn storm track starts to spin up, this northwest-facing beach gets exactly what it needs. From October through March, average surf heights range from around 4.5ft (1.3m) to 6ft (1.8m), with periods sitting in the powerful 11-13 second band. The swell rose is dominated by the W, WNW, NW and NNW quadrants that line up perfectly with the exposed beach. Positive phases of the NAO tend to deepen the Icelandic Low and send a conveyor belt of extratropical storms toward Ireland, and that is when Streedagh truly fires.
Fair Surf Season (April - May and September)
As the storm track weakens in spring and before it fully switches back on in autumn, the surf becomes smaller and less consistent. April still averages 3.5ft (1.1m) at 10.7 seconds and can deliver excellent waves when an E-SSE offshore wind lines up. May is mostly small and short-period, while September marks the first real pulse of autumn energy as average heights climb back to 3.5ft (1.1m) and periods exceed the 10 second mark.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is the quiet season at Streedagh Strand. Average swell heights hover around 2.5-3ft (0.8-0.9m) with periods under 9 seconds, and the wind rose becomes increasingly dominated by onshore W, WNW, NW and NNW flow. Clean surfing windows drop to only 17-22 percent of the time. It is not completely flat, but it is far from the region's prime and better suited to longboards, SUPs and beginners.
