Banzai seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (November - February)
The Mediterranean roars to life in late autumn, and Banzai is at its best from November through February. This is when average wave heights peak at around 3-3.5ft (0.9-1.0m) and the average wave period stretches to 5.0-5.2s - still short-period by ocean standards, but stronger and punchier for this corner of Italy. The swell rose is loaded in the S, SSW, SW and WSW quadrants, the directions that hit this SSW-facing beach squarely. At the same time, the ideal offshore wind window from N through ENE sits at 19-22%, thanks to strong pressure gradients between cold continental high pressure and low pressure systems over the western Mediterranean. A negative NAO pattern in particular helps steer these systems south and reinforces the NE offshore flow. Although the short fetches of the Mediterranean rarely deliver long-period groundswell, these are the months when Banzai offers the most consistent combination of size, direction and clean offshore wind.
Fair Surf Season (March - April and September - October)
These are transition months at Banzai. Wave heights sit around 2-2.5ft (0.6-0.8m) with periods of 4.7-5.1s, while the SW/W/SW swell directions are still present. The quality becomes more fickle as thermal sea breezes start to control the afternoons in spring and early autumn systems bring SE/SSE winds. The ideal offshore wind window drops to 14-17%. These months can produce great dawn sessions, but the consistency is lower and the onshore wind windows are more frequent.
Low Surf Season (May - August)
Summer is a different beast. High pressure over the Mediterranean and an extension of the Azores High shut down the storm track, dropping average wave heights to around 1.5-2ft (0.5-0.6m) and average periods to 4.0-4.5s. The swell spectrum is still mainly from SW/WSW, but most of the energy sits below 1.5ft (0.5m). Thermal westerly and southwesterly sea breezes push onshore, and the ideal offshore wind window falls to 8-12%. May and September are the most promising bets within this low season, while June through August is generally groveling territory. Save your energy for autumn.
