This spot springs to life with southwest and west swells, handling waves around 2 feet (0.6 meters) with a mix of lefts and rights peeling over a blend of reef and sand. The magic happens under northeast winds, and the wave shape holds its own across low, mid, and high tides, offering versatility for surfers who know their way around a board. The access, however, demands attention—navigating a rocky entry scattered with urchins, so a careful step is key. Once in the lineup, the vibe is refreshingly laid-back, a casual energy that offsets the occasional crowd. It’s a popular haunt for intermediate surfers craving a solid session, but be ready to share the peak. When conditions click—particularly with a decent SW or W push—Il Porto turns into a reliable, fun wave that rewards timing and patience.

Best Surf Season (November - February)

Il Porto will never be mistaken for a big-wave destination, but the winter months are when this SSW-facing Italian beach finds its pulse. November through February sees average swell heights nudge up to 0.9-1.0m (3-3.3ft) and average periods climb to 5.0-5.2s, the highest of the year. This is when the North Atlantic gets busy and low-pressure systems deepen over the Mediterranean; any fetch aligned with S/SSW/SW/WSW combines with a higher frequency of offshore northerly and northeasterly winds. When a negative NAO pattern locks in, cold-air outbreaks and Mediterranean cyclogenesis become more common, setting up the best windows of the year. On the best days, Il Porto can offer punchy 1.5-2m (5-6ft) beach-break sets, groomed by N/NE winds. The caveat is that averages are still dominated by short-period windswell, so patience and a keen eye on the forecast are essential.
