La Chiesa seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (December - February)

The heart of the Italian winter brings the most consistent, surfable energy to La Chiesa. Average swell heights climb to around 1m (3ft) and wave periods reach their annual peak near 5.8s, driven by a more active Mediterranean low-pressure regime. While these are not long-period Atlantic swells, the mix of south/southeast swell and the highest frequency of offshore north and northwest winds in the year (up to 29% in December) produces clean, punchy waves that are fun on small days. Water temperatures are cool (13-16°C) and you will need a good winter wetsuit, but the seasonal trade-off is worthwhile. The most reliable windows appear as cold fronts sweep eastward, swinging winds to the north and northwest behind them.

Fair Surf Season (March - April, October - November)

Shoulder months offer occasional surf. In spring, the sea state is still active but becomes more variable; average heights hold around 0.8m (2.5ft) with periods around 5.2-5.5s. Autumn sees the return of southerly swell before the winter storm track fully sets in, particularly in November when S/SE/SW components combine for nearly 40% of the spectrum and ideal wind days edge back up to 23%. These transitions are often the lightest-wind months, with sea breezes and Mediterranean high pressure dominating.

Low Surf Season (May - September)

Summer flattens the Mediterranean. Average swell heights sink to 0.5-0.6m (1.5-2ft) and periods drop below 5s as local thermal winds replace migrating cyclones. The swell is mostly a short-period, wind-driven chop from the W and WNW, which is cross-shore and poor for the south-facing beach. Onshore seabreeze cycles are the norm, with ideal offshore wind percentages hitting an annual low of 14-17%. This is the season for longboard grovels and swimming, not for serious surfing.
