Levanto seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (November - March)

Levanto's surf engine is powered by the westerly storm track of the Mediterranean. From November through March the average swell height climbs to 2-3ft (0.7-0.9m), the average period hovers near 5.8s, and the offshore wind quadrant - NNE, NE, ENE and E - takes over the wind rose. Cold fronts sweeping the Gulf of Lions and secondary low-pressure systems forming over the Gulf of Genoa send consistent SW and WSW swell into the Ligurian Sea. This is the only time of year when the 3-5ft (1-1.5m) and 5-8ft (1.5-2.5m) bands show up with any dependable frequency, and ideal surf wind readings sit in the 25-27% range. When the NAO edges negative, the door opens for Mediterranean cyclogenesis and the kind of offshore NE flow that makes Levanto's sand-bottom peaks genuinely fun.

Fair Surf Season (April - May and September - October)

During the shoulder months the storm track begins to relax, but it has not shut down completely. Average wave heights range from 1.5-2.5ft (0.5-0.7m) and periods fall to 4.8-5.6s, while the wind is ideal only 17-23% of the time. You can still get fun, cranking SW swell from early autumn lows or late spring frontal systems, but consistency drops and SSE/SE windswell mixes with the more favourable westerly energy. Look for windows of light offshore NE wind and a clean west or southwest groundswell for the best of the shoulder season.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

The Azores High locks in over the western Mediterranean during summer, shutting down the synoptic-scale systems that keep Levanto alive. Average swell heights slump to around 1.5ft (0.4m) and periods drop to 4.6-4.9s, with ideal surf wind at just 12-16% of the time. The ocean is warm, the air is hot, and afternoon sea breezes add chop. Most days are flat-to-micro, with a few small longboard rollers from a distant SW windswell. If you are chasing real waves, summer is better spent sightseeing - or waiting for an out-of-season low to deliver a rare clean 3ft day.
