Best Surf Season (November - February)
If you approach Ristorante with realistic Mediterranean expectations, the November through February window is your prime time. Average swell heights peak at 0.9-1.0m (3-3.3ft) and periods reach 5.0-5.2s. That is still short-period windswell by Atlantic standards, but the steady parade of S, SSW, SW and WSW swell trains matches the beach's SSW exposure, and the frequency of offshore N to ENE winds is at its annual maximum (around 35-43% of all wind observations). In November and December, ideal surf windows climb to 19-21%, giving you a real chance at clean, if modest, waves. Water temps range from 13 to 18°C (55-64°F) over the period, so a 4/3mm fullsuit gets the job done. This is when the Mediterranean's low-pressure systems are most active, and every passing depression injects fresh swell into the Tyrrhenian basin.
Fair Surf Season (March - April & October)
The transitional months offer a compromise. In March and April, the ocean still has some winter energy, but the average swell drops to 0.7-0.8m (2.3-2.5ft) and ideal wind windows slip to 17%. The wave directions continue to favour S/SSW/SW/WSW, but the wind rose becomes a mix of offshore and onshore directions, so you need to hunt for the morning windows. October is the mirror image on the way in: swell averages 0.7m (2.3ft) and is trending up, but the wind can be unsettled with SE and SSE winds. Still, water temps are warmer (15.7-20.6°C / 60-69°F), making these months appealing for those who can time the offshore pulses. Expect fun-sized waist-to-chest high waves on good days, but also plenty of flat spells.
Low Surf Season (May - September)
From May through September, Ristorante enters its summer slumber. Average swell heights shrink to 0.5-0.6m (1.5-2ft) and average periods drop below 4.5s, meaning the wave matrix is dominated by low-energy, short-period windswell. The thermal sea breeze cycle sets up on a near-daily basis, with onshore winds out of the southwest quadrant becoming the norm. Offshore N/NE wind frequency is at its annual minimum, and ideal surf windows fall to just 8-12% (with June, July and August the absolute doldrums). Water temp is super friendly - 18.9°C (66°F) in May cranking up to a balmy 25.1°C (77°F) in August - but the lack of real swell and consistent onshore texture means it's a grovel, not a surf destination. Unless you're on a log and love micro-swell, this is the annual flat spell at Ristorante.
