Varazze seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (November - March)
Varazze sits inside the Ligurian Sea, a small but energetic corner of the Mediterranean that responds quickly to cold-season low-pressure systems forming in the Gulf of Genoa. The best surf months run from November through March, when average wave heights climb to around 2.5-3ft (0.8-0.9m) and the short-period windswell becomes more consistent. This is also when the dominant NNW flow is strongest, blowing directly offshore at this SSE-facing beach and holding up the SSW/SW and occasional S/SE swell lines. The action is not big by oceanic standards, but when a low-pressure centre deepens over the Gulf, you can see rideable 2-4ft (0.6-1.2m) waves, and the cleanest days come when a negative NAO steers cold fronts and low pressure into the western Mediterranean, switching the wind into the offshore northerly quadrant. Set your hopes on groomed, punchy 5-7s waves rather than heavy barrels.
Fair Surf Season (April & October)
April and October are transitional. April still sees a fair amount of SSW and SW swell, but the offshore north wind becomes less reliable and the average period drops to 5.1s. October is the better of the two, with an average swell height of 2.5ft (0.7m) and the first autumn storms beginning to spin up over the Gulf; the NNW wind again takes over 43% of the time. Both months offer occasional clean days, but you will need to pick your windows carefully before the full winter pattern locks in.
Low Surf Season (May - September)
From May through September, the Mediterranean high-pressure system takes control and the surf at Varazze goes quiet. Average heights shrink to 1-2ft (0.4-0.5m) and periods drop below 4.5s, leaving mostly micro windswell and bumpy summer sea breeze. The wind becomes dominated by SE/SSE onshore directions, which line up with the worst wind directions for this beach and ruin what little shape exists. Summer is longboard and grovel-mode territory, save for rare weak pulses of SSW/SW swell; surf quality is generally too small and messy for most wave-riders. Water temperatures warm to 22-23C, so if you do surf, think fun-size summer rolldowns in a spring suit.
