Best Surf Season (December and January)

Assinie faces squarely into the southern Atlantic, and its waves are driven by S and SSW groundswell rippling out of mid-latitude South Atlantic storms. The best combination of clean surface conditions and rideable swell happens during the heart of the northern winter, when the Intertropical Convergence Zone migrates south and the West African monsoon weakens. At this time, the average swell height drops to about 3ft (0.9m), but the average period stays in the powerful 10.5-10.8s band. More importantly, offshore flow from the N, NNE, NE and NNW quadrants can blow around 9-10% of the time, and the usual SW/S wind machine is much less intense. The result is clean, punchy, long-period beachbreak surf in the 2-4ft (0.6-1.2m) range, with occasional bigger sets when a pulse of S/SSW swell fills in. It is not the biggest time of year, but it is by far the most surfable.
