Ataka seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (November - February)
Ataka's northwest exposure is truly alive from November through February. These four months deliver the strongest and most consistent swell, with average heights ranging from 1.7m (5.6ft) in November to 2.2m (7.2ft) in December and January. The direction is overwhelmingly favorable - NNW, NW, WNW and W combine for 54-57% of all wave energy, driven by the intense low-pressure systems that form over the Sea of Japan. Although the region is notorious for winter onshore winds, the window of clean, offshore E-ESE-SE-SSE flow still opens around 35-40% of the time, offering plenty of opportunities for standout sessions.
Fair Surf Season (March - April & September - October)
The transition months present a trade-off. In March and April, swell size drops to 1.1-1.4m (3.6-4.6ft) and periods shorten to 6-7 seconds, but the offshore wind frequency increases, especially in April. This creates longboarding-friendly conditions and occasional rippable days when a late-season pulse arrives. In September and October, the surf begins to build back up, with October standing out for the highest 'ideal wind' percentage of the year (41%). These months may lack the raw power of winter, but they often offer the most user-friendly combination of size, wind and warm water.
Low Surf Season (May - August)
From May through August, Ataka falls into a classic summer slump. Average swell heights hover between 0.6-0.8m (2-2.6ft) with periods of just 5-6 seconds, and the dominant swell directions shift to N and NNE - far from ideal. The best chances for excitement come from passing typhoons, but these are rare and inconsistent. June is particularly lifeless, with an 'ideal surf window' of only 22%. It's still possible to find a grovel wave or two on a longboard, but surf travel or patience is required.
