Kugenuma seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
The North Pacific roars to life as autumn gives way to the Siberian High, and Kugenuma settles into its most consistent surf window of the year. High pressure over the Asian continent sets up a strong offshore pressure gradient across Sagami Bay, firing N/NNE/NE/NNW winds directly offshore at this SSW-facing beach. At the same time, low-pressure systems tracking south of Japan and across the western North Pacific inject S/SSW/SW swell into the bay. December and January show the classic winter formula: SW swell dominates with 27-29% of the wave distribution, while the wind rose is anchored by NNE, NE and N. The average height is modest - mostly 2-3ft (0.6-0.9m) - but the period in the 7.8-8.7s range keeps the waves punchy and rideable. October stands out as the most reliable month with 20% ideal wind, and March follows closely as spring begins to mix in more S/SSW energy. This is the season to plan around: clean mornings, consistent southern swell, and far fewer blown-out days.
Fair Surf Season (April and September)
April and September are transition months sitting on either side of the summer lull. April still sees an abundance of SSE (20.0%), S (19.8%) and SSW (19.5%) swell, all of which line up well with Kugenuma's orientation. The problem is the wind: SSW and SW flow strengthen along with the sea breeze, capping the ideal-wind frequency at 17%. September is the better fair month. Typhoon season is in full swing, pushing the average period up to 9.0s and increasing the 1-1.5m (3-5ft) wave class. The wind rose also starts to tilt back toward NNE and NE, lifting the ideal-wind frequency to 18%. Water temperatures are still warm in September and the air is pleasant, but you have to pick the windows carefully between tropical pulses and autumn fronts.
Low Surf Season (May - August)
From late spring through the core of summer, Kugenuma falls into a frustrating pattern. The monsoon circulation and the Pacific subtropical high strengthen the south-southwest flow across Japan, which means the same direction that delivers swell also delivers onshore wind. Swell from S, SSE and SSW is plentiful, but most days are small, windblown and short-period. The average swell height drops to 0.7m (2-3ft) and the period stays near 7.8s from May through June. July bottoms out with only 14% ideal wind and strong SSW/SW sea-breeze dominance. August is the pick of the low season thanks to typhoon energy and the year's highest average period at 9.3s, but onshore winds still make it a gamble. Summer at Kugenuma means warm water, soft surfaces and groveling waves - a true patience month for surfers.
