Best Surf Season (May - June & October - November)
Fishermans Point is a west-north-west facing Liberian beach, which means the dominant S/SSW groundswell of the tropical South Atlantic has to work its way around the coastline to reach the break. True W/WNW/WSW swell is almost absent from the seasonal statistics, so nearly all of the surf comes from the south and south-southwest. The best windows of the year cluster around May - June and October - November, when the seasonal migration of the ITCZ and the strengthening South Atlantic High allow ESE/SE trade winds to line up with solid, long-period S/SSW groundswell. You can expect punchy 3-5ft (0.9-1.5m) surf on the better days, with occasional bigger sets in June and clean, rippable waves in November.
Fair Surf Season (July - September & December)
July through September sees the largest average swells of the year as the South Atlantic storm track becomes more active, with average heights reaching 4-5ft (1.2-1.5m) and plenty of 5-6.5ft (1.5-2m) SSW sets. But the same period is the heart of the Liberian rainy season, and the monsoon wind clocks around to the southwest and west - bad onshore directions for this WNW-facing spot. Quality drops quickly, leaving only occasional glassy mornings or protected corners. December is the opposite: lighter winds and a 31% ideal wind statistic help the small 3ft (0.9m) swell feel clean, but it lacks real power.
Low Surf Season (January - April)
From January through April the surf is consistently small, averaging 3-3.5ft (0.9-1.1m), with periods of 10.7-11.8s and very few waves over 5ft (1.5m). Add to that only 7-14% ideal wind, as WSW/SW/W flow dominates and sits directly onshore. The long-period south swell that does arrive is mostly shadowed or must wrap awkwardly into the bay, and Fishermans Point tends to stay small and bumpy. It is not a total write-off, but the early calendar year is easily the least rewarding for surfers.
