Best Surf Season (March - April)
The Indian Ocean monsoon machine shifts through the equatorial atolls and, for Adonis, the sweet spot arrives during the late northeast monsoon and the following intermonsoon lull. March and April deliver the highest percentage of ideal offshore wind flow and the longest average swell periods of the year, with March peaking in both consistently rideable SSE/S swell directions and a very healthy 56 percent ideal wind score. April holds the crown for cleanest surface conditions with 60 percent ideal wind and 12.0s average period, although the swell angle becomes more SSW/SW-oriented. Expect warm, glassy mornings and clean, long-period lines in the 2-5ft (0.6-1.5m) range.
Fair Surf Season (November - February and July - September)
Two fair windows straddle the monsoon calendar. From November through February, the northeast monsoon brings drier weather and lighter cross-shore to offshore winds, but the swell is smaller and shorter-period, with averages around 1.0-1.1m (3.3-3.6ft) and periods mostly in the 8-10s range. July through September, by contrast, is the core of the southwest monsoon: swell size jumps to 1.3-1.5m (4.3-4.9ft) with long 11-12s periods, but the dominant WSW/SW swell angle and cross-shore west winds reduce the number of perfectly clean waves at this southeast-facing reef. Still, strong southern pulses and occasional NW wind windows can make these months very rewarding.
Low Surf Season (May - June and October)
The low-confidence months at Adonis are the transition windows, especially May-June and October. May and June see the southwest monsoon rapidly intensifying; average size is actually large, but ideal wind percentages collapse to 36-40% and the majority of the swell arrives from SSW/SW/WSW, which does not line up cleanly with the southeast-facing exposure. October is the reverse transition, with the monsoon signal flip-flopping, average period dropping back to 9.9s and a messy mix of S/SW swell and variable W/WNW winds. Rain and cloud cover also increase, making it harder to score clean, well-ordered waves.
