Bedhuge seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (May - September)
From late spring through early autumn, the southwest monsoon becomes the dominant forcing across the equatorial Indian Ocean. Intense continental heating over Asia helps drive a low-pressure circulation that sends a steady SW-WSW wind stream toward the Maldives. For Bedhuge, whose beach faces east, these westerly winds are offshore and groom the swell nicely. The true east-northeast swell corridor of winter is gone, but the monsoon still pumps consistent S/SSE/SW windswell around 4ft (1.3m) on average, with periods between 6.6 and 7.3s. With ideal wind percentages hovering between 55 and 64 percent from June through September, this is the most reliable window for clean, rippable surf at Bedhuge. The east-facing reef trades all-out size for shape, consistency, and far less onshore chop.
Fair Surf Season (April, October, November)
These months are caught between monsoon regimes. April marks the arrival of offshore westerlies but before the south swell has really built; October and November are the reverse, with the southwest monsoon fading and the northeast monsoon beginning to reassert itself. Expect mixed swell directions, shifting winds, periods around 6.4-7.0s, and average wave heights in the 3-4ft (1-1.2m) range. Conditions can deliver fun sessions on the right day, especially when a fresh west wind smooths out a building south-southwest swell, but consistency and purity are elusive.
Low Surf Season (December - March)
The northeast monsoon takes over, and while Bedhuge actually sees its largest share of NE, ENE, E, and ESE swell during this period, the winds blow from the same bad directions. Onshore NE/ENE/E/ESE flow dominates a large part of the time, and ideal offshore wind drops to only 12-40 percent across these months. The average wave period also falls to 6.2-6.7s, meaning short-period, locally generated windswell that quickly turns bumpy and messy under the easterly breeze. On paper the biggest east swell may be present, but in practice surface quality is at its lowest. It takes a rare west-northwest wind window to make Bedhuge truly fun during the northeast monsoon.
