Castaways seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (December - March)
The Maldives' surf season peaks during the northeast monsoon, when the wind shifts to the offshore quadrant for the south-facing beach at Castaways. High pressure over the Bay of Bengal and the Indian subcontinent funnels dry, modulated N to NW winds across the islands, while the Indian Ocean starts sending consistent south swells into the chain. During this stretch, the average swell height sits at a fun 1.1-1.2m (3.5-4ft), with periods in the powerful 10-11.3s long-period range. Wave directions are dominated by SE, SSE, S and SSW - exactly what Castaways is exposed to. The result is clean, rippable, and remarkably consistent surf.
Fair Surf Season (April & November)
The transition months between the two monsoons offer a mixed bag. April sees the winds turning west and west-southwest, and the ideal wind percentage drops to around 35%. The swell remains excellent - often larger and longer-period than mid-season - but the afternoon sea breeze and shifting wind directions make conditions more hit or miss. November is the reverse, as the northeast monsoon tries to re-establish itself. The surf is still solid, and the increasing frequency of NW winds means some great days are possible, but expect a higher percentage of off-color, onshore days compared to the prime season.
Low Surf Season (May - October)
The southwest monsoon from May through October is the low season for quality surfing at Castaways. The beach is exposed to a south swell, and this is exactly what arrives - often stronger than the winter months - with average heights climbing to 1.5-1.7m (5-5.5ft) and periods remaining in the powerful long-period range. However, the prevailing winds blow from W/SW/WNW, which are onshore or cross-onshore for the beach. Ideal wind frequencies bottom out at 13-20%, and the constant wind plus increased rainfall create messy, bumpy wave surfaces. Only occasional early-morning windows, or the rare synoptic break, offer clean surf. This is not the time to plan a trip unless you're happy to gamble.
