Best Surf Season (March - April)
The magic window at Finnimas opens during the late northeast monsoon transition. As the northeast trades begin to relax, the swell direction swings into the southern quadrant and the percentage of offshore north/northeasterly wind remains high. March is the standout month with 65% ideal wind and a stunning 78% of swell approaching from the preferred SE-SSW window. April holds the swell energy but the wind becomes more variable and westerly, still leaving plenty of clean, long-period groundswell. This is the sweet spot: glassy mornings, long-period lines in the 11-12s range, and punchy 3ft waves pouring down the reef.
Fair Surf Season (January - February, November - December)
The heart of the northeast monsoon produces excellent offshore wind consistency, especially in February (58%) and December (55%), but the swell window is dominated by ENE-E energy that struggles to wrap efficiently into this SSE-facing reef. Wave heights remain around 1.0m with periods of 8-9s, so the surf is usually small and a bit closed out, with only occasional peaks when a south component in the swell aligns. November and December see the trades re-establishing after the wet monsoon, offering cleaner conditions and a gradual increase in rideable days, though still lacking the swell power of the spring.
Low Surf Season (May - July, October)
The southwest monsoon brings the largest surf of the year to the Maldives, but at Finnimas it is often blown out by strong onshore westerly and southwesterly winds. From May through July, ideal wind percentages drop to a dismal 23-26% while swell heights climb to 1.4-1.5m (4.5-5ft) with 11-12s periods. The energy is there, but the onshore wind tears up the wave faces and makes the reef section a washing machine. October is equally forgettable: the swell starts to fade, periods drop below 10s, and westerly winds still dominate. Only the occasional dawn patrol with a lucky NW wind window makes this period worthwhile.
