Gaukendi Bridge seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (December - March)

The heart of the Northeast Monsoon brings the most consistent offshore winds of the year to Gaukendi Bridge. From December through March, the trade flow out of the NNE through E quadrant blows cleanly offshore across the west-southwest facing reef, grooming whatever swell finds its way onto the island chain. Average surf heights hover around 4ft (1.2m) with periods building from 9.7s to a more powerful 11.2s by March. While the dominant swell direction during these months tends to be more S/SE than ideal, the combination of glassy surface conditions, warm water, and low rainfall makes this the most user-friendly and rippable stretch of the year. January and February are the standout months, with ideal wind percentages of 57% and 61% respectively - the highest of the entire annual cycle.

Fair Surf Season (April - May & October - November)

These are the monsoon transition windows where the southern hemisphere swell machine starts to throw more west in the direction - SSW, SW, and WSW signals become increasingly prominent. April and May see average swell heights climb to 1.3m-1.6m (4-5ft) with periods in the 11.4-11.6s range, and November delivers the greatest percentage of optimally directed swell of any month, with over 54% coming from the SSW-SW-WSW-W quadrant. However, this added westerly energy comes at the cost of wind quality. The trade winds weaken and are replaced by westerly and southwesterly onshore flows as the ITCZ and monsoon trough shift overhead. Ideal wind percentages crash to 12-14%, meaning many days will be lumpy, bumpy, and wind-affected. Look for dawn patrol mornings and localized sea breeze breaks for the cleanest windows.

Low Surf Season (June - September)

The Southwest Monsoon peaks during the months of June through September, bringing the largest average swell heights of the year - 1.6m to 1.8m (5-6ft) - but with a catch. The vast majority of this energy arrives from the SSE and S directions, with only 6-14% coming from the preferred SSW through W window. Meanwhile, the persistent SE to SW wind flow creates predominantly onshore or cross-onshore conditions, chopping up the face and killing the wave quality. Ideal wind percentages range from just 20% in September up to 34% in July, but even the 'good' days are often stormy and lumpy. That said, this is the season for the biggest, most powerful swell, and the rare day when a strong easterly burst aligns with a westerly component in the swell can produce heavy, pumping waves at Gaukendi Bridge.
