Muli seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (December - March)

The northeast monsoon delivers the clearest skies, lighter winds, and the most consistent offshore flow for Muli's SE-facing reef. Swell heights hover in the 3-5ft (1-1.5m) range with average periods of 9-11s, but the crucial advantage is the high percentage of WNW to NNW wind - a true offshore breeze that keeps the wave faces clean and the reefs groomed. This is the window when the Indian Ocean's trade-wind-driven swell meets manageable winds and pleasant conditions, making it the most reliable time to find rippable, peaky waves.

Fair Surf Season (April, October - November)

As the monsoon transitions, the Maldives experiences a shift in wind and swell regimes. April holds onto some of the NE monsoon's wind patterns - ideal wind around 53% - while the swell pulse begins to strengthen from the south. October and November see the onset of the next monsoon change: bigger S/SSW swells fill in, but the wind percentages drop to 35% and 43% respectively. You can still find quality sessions, especially on the days when the westerly-to-northwesterly offshore breeze lines up with the longer-period S or SSE swell, but the consistency is lower and the onshore windows increase.

Low Surf Season (May - September)

The southwest monsoon takes hold, bringing a distinct shift to SW and W winds, which blow onshore for Muli's SE exposure. Although the average swell height increases dramatically - often 5-6ft (1.5-1.8m) with periods in the 11-12s range - these are primarily south and southwest quadrant swells that lack the clean alignment of the winter months. The percentage of ideal wind plummets to 20-33% through June-August, making for frequent windslop, bumpy surfaces, and generally poor conditions. Only the occasional low-latitude disturbance or a brief easing of the monsoon winds can offer a glimmer of surfable moments. For the average surfer, this is the season to travel or fix the quiver.
