Yin Yang seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (April - September)
The southwest monsoon transforms Yin Yang during the northern-hemisphere summer. As the Intertropical Convergence Zone drifts north, a persistent WSW-to-WNW flow sets up across the Maldives, delivering exactly the offshore wind angles this ESE-facing reef needs. The average period climbs to around 7s, the average swell height holds near 1.3m (4.3ft), and the percentage of ideal surf wind jumps to 53-63%. Swell direction is not perfect - the bulk comes from SSE, S and SSW - but the long equatorial fetch wraps around the atoll and offers some of the cleanest, most rippable waves of the year. This is the window when Yin Yang becomes a genuinely user-friendly reef break with consistent, punchy 3-5ft (1-1.5m) waves.
Fair Surf Season (March, October - November)
March, October and November are the shoulder months when the monsoon engines are changing gears. Swell directions are a mix of the dying E/SE pulse and the rising S/SW pulse, while offshore winds are still frequent enough to keep the surface clean. Wave heights run a little smaller and periods shorten to 6.4-6.7s, so you need to pick the right tide and the right swell window to find the fun. These months are worth chasing because you can score empty, clean Yin Yang while the winds are still westerly.
Low Surf Season (December - February)
The northeast monsoon dominates the northern winter months. The swell window is actually ideal - ENE, E and ESE swells make up more than 80 percent of the directional spectrum at Yin Yang. The problem is the wind: NNE, NE and ENE breezes blow from the sea toward the land for the vast majority of the time, leaving the reef choppy and lumpy. Ideal offshore wind only arrives 17-21% of the time, and those windows are usually tied to brief NW/NNW pulses. If you can time one properly, the E/ENE swell can produce peaky, mechanical waves on the reef; otherwise, expect 1m (3.3ft), 6.2-6.4s windslop.
