Costa Azul seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (November - March)
Costa Azul's most consistent surfable windows occur between November and March, when the North American continent cools and the first strong cold fronts begin to push into the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean. This synoptic pattern not only generates the preferred ENE, E, ESE and SE swells but also sets up the local thermal offshore flow from the WNW and NW. The average wave period sits in the powerful 11.9-13.5s range, and although average heights only hover around 0.8-0.9m (2.4-2.7ft), the frequency of properly angled swell is at its annual peak. December and January are the standout months, with up to 6-7% of all swell energy arriving from the ideal ESE to SE quadrant. When these pulses combine with the morning offshore winds, the points and sandbars can produce long, rippable waves in the waist-to-chest high range. Frontal passages can also deliver the occasional overhead day, provided the swell angle locks in from the southeast.
Fair Surf Season (April - June)
As spring progresses, the westerly wind regime becomes extremely consistent - ideal wind percentages peak in April and May at 88-89%. However, the seasonal swell window shifts south of due south, with S and SSW directions dominating over 90% of the wave spectrum in April and May. This is Southern Hemisphere-generated groundswell, pushing large amounts of energy toward the Mexican coast, but Costa Azul's east-southeast-facing orientation reduces its quality. Waves are still present, and the long 14-second periods are inviting, but the break gets closeouts and unruly sections when it is forced to bend across the sandbar. A handful of ENE/ESE pulses can still sneak through during transitions between storm tracks, offering clean, fun-sized waves. Overall, however, April through June represents a transitional season with plenty of wind and ocean energy but a misaligned swell direction.
Low Surf Season (July - October)
The core summer and early autumn months are the trickiest for finding clean, directional surf at Costa Azul. Swell heights increase to their yearly maximum - averages of 1.1-1.2m (3.6-3.9ft) - but the wave energy is almost exclusively from the S and SSW, which is directly opposite the favorable ENE-SE window. The long-period southern hemi swells wrap into the coast, yet the beach fails to refract them into good shape. Additionally, tropical weather systems in the Eastern Pacific and occasional tropical storms increase the frequency of E and SE winds, cutting into the already weaker offshore wind regime; the ideal wind percentage drops to 70-75% in August and September. Then again, when a hurricane or tropical storm in the Pacific pushes an ESE swell, or when thunderstorms temporarily shift the wind to W/NW, there can be brief moments of fun surf. But for the most part, July through October is a season of oversized but messy south swells, lower insider consistency, and cross-shore energy - a time best spent chasing other setups.
