Escolleras seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (December - March)

Escolleras is a south-facing set-up that cleans up best when the North Pacific high builds over the region and pushes offshore N/NNE/NE winds across the coastline. From December through March, ideal wind frequencies reach 52-62%, the dry season is in full swing, and long-period S/SW/SSW groundswell rolls in consistently. Wave heights average around 3-4ft (1.0-1.2m) with periods near 13-14 seconds, so most days offer clean, lined-up, fun-to-solid surf without too much size. Water temps hover around 28°C and rain is minimal, making this the most reliable window for groomed waves.

Fair Surf Season (April - May & October - November)

The shoulder months are the trade-off months. April and May see the first proper southern-hemisphere pulses, with average heights climbing to 4-5ft (1.3-1.4m) and periods reaching 14 seconds. The catch is a rising tendency for WSW/SW onshore flow, especially in the afternoons. October and November are the mirror image: the swell is still solid, but the wind regime is shifting back toward offshore N/NE directions, and rainfall begins to decline. These months can deliver the best combination of size and clean conditions, especially during the morning hours.

Low Surf Season (June - September)

Summer is the hardest season to score Escolleras cleanly. The southern-hemisphere swell machine peaks, and tropical cyclones can send heavy S/SW energy into the break, but the wet season arrives with high humidity, maximum water temperatures near 31°C and a lot of rain - September averages nearly 10mm/day. The wind distribution becomes dominated by unfavourable S, SSE, SE and SW directions, and ideal wind percentages fall to 33-45%. It is not a dead season by any means; when a tropical system tracks favourably and N/NE flow returns behind it, Escolleras can produce powerful, heavy and occasionally oversized surf. Rather than consistent, though, it is opportunistic.
