Best Surf Season (June - October)

When the eastern Pacific hurricane alley starts spinning up and the summer wind regime locks in, Las Gatas finds its most consistent, cleanest surf. The average wave height climbs to 1.4-1.5m (4.6-4.9ft) with long-period energy in the 13-14s range, and the wind is ideal 39-46% of the time. With the beach facing west, long-period SSW and SW swells wrap around the point and groom into playful, rippable peaks along the reef. Water temperatures hover near 30°C, and the offshore breeze tends to favour the early morning before the afternoon sea breeze gets going.

Fair Surf Season (November - February)

As the Pacific hurricane season fades, the swell window shifts back toward the south-west and wave heights drop slightly to 1.0-1.2m (3.2-3.9ft). The period stays solid at 13s+, so there is still plenty of push for a grovel board or a small-wave twin fin. The main trade-off is wind: northerly and northwesterly flows become more frequent, and the percentage of ideal offshore wind drops to 17-27%. Catch the dawn windows between winter cold fronts and you can find clean, long-period lines in warm 27-29°C water.

Low Surf Season (March - May)

Late spring is the most frustrating time at Las Gatas for surface conditions. While the underlying swell actually builds - April and May average 1.3-1.4m (4.3-4.6ft) with 14s periods - the wind is ideal only 7-12% of the time. Strong westerly and northwesterly sea breezes, driven by the warming continent, constantly chop up the bay. The water is warm and the place is beautiful, but those who score it are surfing more for the tropics than for epic waves.
