August: Southern Swell With a Tropical Rhythm

August keeps the same rhythm as July-average period 12.4s, average wave height around 5ft (1.5m) and ideal wind 40%-but with an even stronger due S component. S swell jumps to 30.5%, SSW is 34.0%, and the reliable NNW background is 18.6%. This provides more open-ocean, south-facing energy and a slightly different shape in the water; the S swells tend to wrap with more consistency, while the SSW pulses are more lined-up. Wind conditions remain excellent for surf: NNE (24.4%), NNW (24.2%) and N (21.7%) dominate, with the S wind sector all but absent. Most waves are in the 3.3-4.9ft (1-1.5m) range, but the 5-6.6ft (1.5-2m) classes from SSW (10.1%) and NNW (11.9%) keep things interesting. Water temp peaks at 30.8°C, air is 28.3°C, and rainfall comes mainly as afternoon tropical showers at 6.28 mm/day. Surf in the morning, dodge the rain at midday, and enjoy a long, clean south swell season.
