April: Long-Period South Swell Takes Hold

April is the first true peak-season month at Rio de Coyula. Average swell height reaches 5ft (1.5m) and period jumps to 14.0s - squarely in the long-period, powerful range. SSW becomes the absolute engine of the swell spectrum at 65 percent, with SW at 17 percent and S at 11 percent, meaning the beach is almost entirely exposed to the swell directions that work best. There is also a strong jump in the 1.5-2m range: SSW alone puts nearly 23 percent of all waves in that solid hollow-enough category.

The catch in April is the wind. Ideal conditions drop to 44 percent, the lowest of the year, as the springtime sea breeze builds into a stronger W/SW afternoon flow. W winds reach 19 percent and WSW/SW directions are common, especially at 10-20kph, which can chop up the surface before the evening. Early sessions are the key. With air temperature at 29.0°C, water temperature already at 28.8°C and rain still limited to 0.22mm/day, April offers warm, relatively dry conditions and a much stronger south swell - just watch the clock.
