Sidi Moussa d'Aglou seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (November - February)
When the North Atlantic storm track shifts south and the Azores High relaxes, Sidi Moussa d'Aglou gets its most powerful and consistent surf. Average wave heights climb to 6-7ft (1.8-2.1m), with periods regularly in the powerful 12-13s range. The west and northwest fetch points straight at the exposed NW-facing beach, and the wind climatology finally offers meaningful windows of offshore E/ESE/SE/SSE flow. December and January are the standout months, with ideal wind percentages above 50 percent and a consistent supply of head-high to overhead surf. A negative NAO winter can be particularly explosive here, as stronger lows are steered closer to the African coast.
Fair Surf Season (March - May and September - October)
These shoulder seasons see a mix of still-punchy Atlantic swell and deteriorating local wind. March can match winter in size, but the trade wind driven NW flow begins to comb out the waves. April and May hold plenty of swell, with the NW/NNW quadrant almost constant, yet average periods fall to 9-11s and onshore winds take over, dropping ideal conditions below 25 percent. By September and October, the ocean is waking up again: storm tracks lengthen, periods push back through 10-11s, and the first true offshore windows of autumn begin to appear. October in particular sees ideal wind percentages climb toward 37 percent as the Atlantic storm engine starts turning.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
The summer months are the quietest and least reliable at Sidi Moussa d'Aglou. The Azores High pumps up a relentless NW/NNW trade wind while the North Atlantic storm machine goes dormant. Swell heights shrink to an average of 4-5ft (1.4-1.5m), but periods drop into the 8-9s short-period range and an almost constant onshore flow from the NW quadrant kills most sessions. The coast still sees plenty of waves, often waist to chest high, but racy, bumpy conditions make it a tough time to find quality. Only when a rare SE offshore wind lines up with a pulse of summer groundswell does the spot show its true potential.
