Best Surf Season (October - March)
The Moroccan coastline finally switches on as the North Atlantic roars to life. With the Azores High retreating south and the polar-front jet stream cranking across the Atlantic, a conveyor belt of extratropical cyclones is aimed at the coast of Africa. Average swell heights at Spiders climb into the 6-8ft (1.8-2.4m) range with periods consistently in the 11-13s bracket, and a good chunk of that energy arrives from the NW/NNW with occasional WNW/W pulses - exactly the kind of long-period groundswell that works its way into this WSW-facing spot. Offshore winds from the E/ENE/ESE become much more frequent, pushing ideal-wind percentages up to 50-60 percent. This is the time to plan your strike.
Fair Surf Season (April-May & September)
Between the winter swell machine and the summer trade-wind regime, Spiders gets a mixed bag. April still produces plenty of NNW groundswell in the 6-7ft (1.8-2.1m) range, but average periods fall to 10-11s and the northerly winds start to clock around more cross-shore. May is smaller and shorter-period, while September marks the first whisper of autumn groundswell as long-period energy begins to reappear. Expect inconsistent but fun, occasionally rippable waves when the wind cooperates.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summertime at Spiders is all about high pressure. The Azores High locks in over the North Atlantic, suppressing low-pressure systems and keeping the Atlantic storm track far to the north. Swell heights settle around 5ft (1.6m) with periods of only 8s, and the direction becomes almost exclusively short-period NNW windswell. Onshore/cross-shore northerly trade winds dominate, and the percentage of ideal offshore wind drops to the 30-40 percent range. Small days and only occasional clean morning windows make this the low season for serious surf.
