Skeleton Bay / Donkey Bay seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (April - September)

This is the heart of the Skeleton Bay year. During the southern autumn and winter, the subantarctic storm track shifts north and fires repeated extratropical cyclones into the South Atlantic. The average swell height climbs to 1.4-1.5m (4.6-4.9ft), while the average period sits in the generous 12.2-12.8s band. That is the engine room of the famous Namibian sandbar. The direction rose still points overwhelmingly to the SSW-SW quadrant, but those long-period south-western groundswells wrap efficiently into the NW-facing beach, and with the wind blowing offshore from the S, SSE, SSW and SW for 47-55 percent of the time, the waves groom into clean, hollow, reeling lines. Water temperatures cool to 12.9-14.2°C, but the consistency and quality more than make up for the extra rubber.

Fair Surf Season (March, October - November)

These are the transition windows at the edge of winter. March is essentially a pre-season month: the average height is still 1.3m (4.3ft) and the period 11.9s, but the storm track is just beginning to wake up. October and November are the mirror image in spring; the Atlantic is still sending solid SSW-SW groundswell, averaging 1.3-1.4m (4.3-4.6ft) with 11.4-11.6s periods, but the consistency starts to wobble and the percentage of truly clean, fully offshore days drops to 40-42 percent. You can still find great barrels, especially on the larger swells, but you have to pick the windows more carefully.

Low Surf Season (December - February)

Midsummer in the South Atlantic is the quietest stretch around the Skeleton Bay sandbar. The average swell height dips to 1.2m (3.9ft) and the period shortens to 11.5-11.7s. The SSW-SW direction remains dominant, but the energy is less organised and more wind-swell contaminated. Ideal offshore winds also become scarcer, running only 37-41 percent of the time, especially in January, when the South Atlantic High weakens and the sea breeze cycle becomes more disruptive. The waves are still rideable and occasionally fun, but this is the time of smaller, softer, less consistent surf. For the full Skeleton Bay experience, wait for the winter months.
