Blaketown sits hard against the south side of the Grey River mouth, tucked right beside the breakwater. It’s a classic mixed bag of sand and rock, the beach giving way to a rough stone breakwater at the north end—bottom contours that shape a raw, unpredictable wave. Multiple peaks dot the beach, offering both rights and lefts, but the standout is the right-hander peeling off the breakwater itself. This wave starts with a steep, hollow drop before rifling into a fast, powerful wall. As the swell cranks, it gets thick and serious, serving up legitimate barrels for those willing to charge.

Best Surf Season & Climatology

Best Surf Season (May - August)

The heart of the action at Blaketown Wedge comes with the southern winter, when the Tasman Sea and the Southern Ocean are firing on all cylinders. Average swell heights push 2.0m (6.5-7ft) and mean wave periods climb to 12.0-12.4s, giving the northwest-facing Wedge the long-period groundswell it needs to light up. During these months the wind distribution tilts decisively towards the E/ESE quadrant - especially in June and July, when the ideal offshore wind percentage tops 70 percent. The result is clean, powerful and consistent surf, with plenty of 1.5-2.5m (5-8ft) sets rolling through. This is the closest you'll get to machine-like consistency on the West Coast, and the cold winter air is a small price to pay for the quality.
