Motunau Beach Island seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (May - August)

Winter is the main event at Motunau Beach Island. As the Southern Ocean storm track ramps up, extratropical lows marching west to east below New Zealand send long-period S, SSW and SW swells toward the Canterbury coast. Average wave heights climb to 1.4m (4-5ft), average periods hover around 10.7-11.2s, and the wind is ideal a solid 53-58 percent of the time. The combination of longer-period groundswell and frequent N/NW offshore flow is the recipe for the cleanest, most powerful surf of the year. Water temperatures drop to 9-11°C, so a 5/4 hooded suit is essential, but the reward is consistent, punchy waves.

Fair Surf Season (March - April and September - October)

March and April see the first strong Southern Ocean fronts mixing with remnant summer E/ESE energy. Periods rise from 9.9s in February to over 10.8s by April, and ideal wind frequency jumps from 34 to 48 percent. September and October are mirror images as the ocean slowly lets go of winter, with S and SSE swells still producing rideable surf while water temps sit near 10-12°C. These shoulder months offer a good balance between size and manageability.

Low Surf Season (November - February)

Summer is the slow season at Motunau. The subtropical high drifts south and the Southern Ocean storm track weakens, leaving mostly short-period E and ENE windswell with average heights around 1.1-1.2m (3-4ft) and periods under 10s. Clean offshore winds become less common, dropping to 33-36 percent ideal in January, November and December, while afternoon NE sea breezes tend to chop the surface. There are still fun days when a stray S groundswell lines up with a morning NW offshore, but consistency is limited.
