May: Winter Groundswell Arrives in Earnest

May is when the Southern Ocean really clears its throat. Average swell height jumps to 2.1m (7ft) with a 12.1s period, pushing Oakura into the pumping, heavy range. The dominant swell direction remains WSW at 37.4 percent, but the more westerly and north-westerly sectors become increasingly active: W adds 9.9 percent, WNW 5.2 percent, NW 3.3 percent and NNW 3.2 percent, with the optimal window totaling just over 12 percent. Long-period WNW swells are pure gold here, and even the WSW swells arrive with enough period to refract powerfully around the Taranaki coastline.

Wind quality remains solid at 23 percent ideal, with WSW winds taking the lead at 16.0 percent and SW contributing another 9.2 percent. The more frequent winter fronts bring rain (4.42 mm/day) and cooler air temperatures (14.8°C), while water temp drops to 16.8°C. Expect bigger, more committed surf, more lineup movement, and plenty of opportunity for a proper winter swell with clean offshore southwesterly winds.
