June: Winter Swells Lock In

June continues the winter charge with an average swell height of 2.5m (8ft), a period of 12.3s, and ideal wind percentages holding at a solid 50 percent. The swell direction shows a clear pattern: WSW is still the boss at 35.8 percent, W contributes 8.6 percent, and the N/NW side of the compass-NNW 3.0, NW 3.2, NNE 0.9, N 0.5-ticks up to around 7.6 percent. That subtle increase in directly favorable swell direction is exactly what Westport Breakwater needs to turn a bogging westerly groundswell into a steep, roping breakwater wave.

Winds remain friendly for the spot, with SW at 12.2 percent and SSW/S at 14.2 percent combined, while the onshore N/NNW/NW quadrant falls to roughly 15 percent. There is also an increase in E/ESE/SE winds as winter high pressure systems drift north, providing light cross-offshore alternatives on the days when the southwest flow is soft. Water temp drops to 13.3°C and air temp to 9.7°C; with 5.42 mm/day of precipitation, expect cold, green, stormy conditions-the kind that keep fair-weather surfers out and committed ones rewarded.
