Byberg

Byberg is a northwest-facing boulder reef and point break that draws its lifeblood from southwest swells. While not the most powerful or consistent spot on the coast, it dishes out playful, whackable left-hand walls that can be a blast when conditions align. The setup tends to be sectiony and a little soft, but when the swell pushes to around four feet, the reef handles it well and offers rideable waves for a range of abilities. On bigger days, a short, fun right materializes to the south, adding some variety. Best performance comes with east winds to groom the face, and the spot remains surfable across low, mid, and high tides—each bringing a slightly different character to the peaks. Accessibility is straightforward, though the narrow access road demands respect: park considerately and keep the path clear. The recommended water entry is via the boat ramp for a clean paddle out. Nearby facilities at Bore Strand Camping serve as a handy landmark for planning your session. Byberg may not be a headline destination, but on a good swell with light winds, it delivers enough fun to make the detour worthwhile.

Best Surf Season (October - March)

Byberg points west-northwest into the Norwegian Sea, making it a direct highlight reel of the North Atlantic storm track during the cold months. From October through March, average swell heights run 4-5ft (1.2-1.6m) with average periods of 7.5-8.5s, and the W to NW quadrants deliver the most consistent swell of the year. As extratropical cyclones rip across the Atlantic, long-period swell lines find the beach, and a positive North Atlantic Oscillation phase tends to strengthen exactly those westerly and northwesterly pulses. Ideal offshore winds from the E/ESE/SE/SSE quadrant also increase to 30-36% of the time, giving genuine clean windows. The catch is winter: frequent W/NW gales, temperatures near freezing, and water as cold as 5-7°C. But the rewards are real - powerful, punchy, sometimes pumping days.
