Hovden seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
Hovden is a pure west-facing North Atlantic outpost, which means its surf season is dictated by the pulse of low-pressure systems rolling toward Norway. The best months are October through March, when average swell heights run 4-6ft (1.2-1.8m) and periods sit in the 8-10s range, with regular pulses of long-period W, WSW, and WNW groundswell. The beach is wide open to the optimal SW-to-NW window, so even moderate Atlantic gales set the breaks alive. During negative NAO blocks, the storm track can stall near Scandinavia and produce days of heavy, lined-up surf; when a high settles over Scandinavia, offshore E/SE winds groom the swell into clean walls. It is cold and wet, but this is the core of Hovden's surf year.
Fair Surf Season (April and September)
April and September are transitional shoulder months. April average height drops to 3-4ft (0.9-1.2m) and period to 8.3s, but the wind flips offshore more often than any other month - 19% ideal conditions - making it a sleeper pick for clean, fun waves. September sees the first renewed Atlantic energy with average height back to 3-4ft (0.9-1.2m) and a growing share of W and WSW swell, although the shorter 7.6s period means less power. These months deliver smaller but far more user-friendly surf than midsummer.
Low Surf Season (May - August)
From May through August, Hovden drops into summer low-gear. Average swell heights fall to 2-3ft (0.6-0.9m), periods shrink to 6.6-7.3s, and the North Atlantic's main storm tracks retreat north. Dominant NNW and NW swell directions still hit the beach, but most energy is short-period windswell or small background swell. Water temperatures warm to 8-15°C, yet the onshore sea breeze and only 7-9% of time with ideal winds mean it is a season for longboards, foils, and patience, not for epic Hovden sessions.
