Hustadvika seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic low-pressure machine reawakens in October, and Hustadvika's west-northwest-facing coast starts to light up. Average swell heights climb from 1.7m (5.6ft) in October to 2.1-2.2m (6.9-7.2ft) in December-February, with average periods sitting at 11-12s. That puts most sessions in the powerful long-period bracket. W, WNW, NW and NNW groundswell - the direction window this coast is built for - dominates the wave rose, while offshore E/ESE/SE/SSE winds blow 41-47% of the time. This is the classic window for cold, pitching, sometimes heavy waves along the rocky points. Positive NAO winters often deliver a conveyor belt of Atlantic lows and maximum swell; negative NAO blocks can park high pressure over Scandinavia, drop the wind out, and leave the ocean clean but smaller. Either way, the average winter day at Hustadvika is far more likely to give you a proper wave than a flat one.

Fair Surf Season (April and September)

April and September are the shoulder months. In April the average period drops to 10.0s and the ideal wind percentage falls to 36%, but the swell rose is still full of NNW and W swell, so there are occasional clean, head-high days as spring high pressure starts to build. September is the better of the two: the first autumn storms bring the average period back up to 9.5s and average heights to 1.4m (4.6ft), with 37% ideal wind. The water is still warm from summer, making it an appealing transition month, but consistency is not yet at winter levels.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

From May through August Hustadvika enters its low season. Average swell heights hover between 1.0 and 1.2m (3.3-3.9ft), periods drop to 7.7-8.7s, and ideal wind percentages fall to 26-32%. The swell direction still contains plenty of NNW/NW from the Norwegian Sea, but most of it is short-period, locally generated windswell rather than organized groundswell. Midsummer high pressure and sea breezes often produce small, bumpy afternoon conditions. Early mornings can still offer clean, fun, head-high-or-better waves on the right combination, especially in May and August, but the heavy, reliable winter juice is gone.
