Orre seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
From October through March, Orre sits directly in the firing line of the North Atlantic storm track. Average swell heights climb to a consistent 4-5ft (1.2-1.6m), wave periods hold in the 7.5-8.5s range, and the W/WNW/WSW/SW swell window that this south-west-facing beach needs is kept full by a steady conveyor belt of extratropical cyclones. Offshore wind windows from NE/ENE/E/ESE are at their best, with ideal conditions 13-15% of the time. It is cold, wet and often dark, but the consistency and power are unmatched.
Fair Surf Season (April, May and September)
April and May see the North Atlantic storm track weaken and retreat, leaving Orre with smaller, shorter-period windswell. The average is only 2-3ft (0.6-0.9m) and the wind is less favourable, which makes those days a bit hit-or-miss. September is the exception, as the first autumn lows of the season begin to regenerate W/NW swell and the odds of a clean offshore morning start to climb. These months are for the patient surfer who can pick the right window.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
June through August is the summer lull at Orre. Average heights drop to around 2ft (0.7m) and periods fall to 6s, with most of the energy coming from short-period windswell rather than true groundswell. The dominant NNW/NW and SE/SSE winds are largely cross-shore at this beach, and true offshore winds only blow 4-6% of the time. Water temperatures rise to 15-17°C, which is comfortable, but the surf is usually small and soft. It is a beach-bum season rather than a serious surf season.
