January: Peak Winter Punch

January is one of Sele's most dependable months. The North Atlantic storm track is at full tilt, pushing average wave heights to 1.6m (5-6ft) with average periods around 8.4s. Swell direction is heavily weighted toward the optimal W, WSW, and WNW windows: W contributes 13.3%, WNW 11.1%, WSW 11.0% and SW 10.2%. That means the WSW-facing beach is constantly seeing solid, punchy groundswell. Longer period windows of 10-14s are not as common as they are further south in Europe, but the frequent 8s-plus energy keeps the beach well in the rideable, powerful zone by Norwegian standards.

It is not always clean, however. Winds are highly variable, with SE (11.9%), SSE (10.8%) and NNW (11.8%) all competing for dominance. Offshore direction from NE, ENE, E and ESE totals a respectable but modest share, giving ideal conditions only about 13% of the time. When a ridge of high pressure sits over mainland Scandinavia, it funnels cold offshore easterlies through the local fjords and Sele becomes a freezing, glassy dream. With water at 6.1°C and air averaging just 2.2°C, you will need a warm hooded 5/4 or 6/5 wetsuit, but those rare offshore winter sessions are worth every frozen second.
