Unstad seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
The North Atlantic roars to life in October and stays angry through March, making this the prime window to chase real waves at Unstad. Average swell heights climb to 1.5-1.9m (5-6ft) with average periods of 8.8-10.2s, as deep extratropical lows and polar lows track across the Norwegian Sea. Unstad's west-northwest exposure is ideally aligned for the W, WNW, NW and NNW swells that these storms generate, and the data show that this six-month stretch delivers the highest percentage of head-high to double-overhead surf of the year. The catch is wind: truly offshore E, ESE, SE and SSE flow occurs only 11-14% of the time, so the best days are those precious windows between gales when a strong low moves off and cold, offshore winds clean up the face.
Fair Surf Season (April, May & September)
The shoulder months offer smaller but more forgiving surf. April averages 1.2m (4ft) with 8.8s period, and September is similar with a rising swell curve as the autumn storm track reawakens. May drops to 0.9m (3ft) and 7.8s, but the lighter wind statistics and longer daylight make it a reasonable time for small-wave fun, especially when east and southeast winds groom the WNW-facing beach. These months are for keeping expectations flexible and being ready to move when an early-season or late-season low sends a clean NW swell.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is the quiet period at Unstad. Only 8-11% of the wind is truly ideal, and waves mostly run 0.8-0.9m (2-3ft) with periods of 6.9-7.3s. High pressure settles over the Norwegian Sea, limiting strong swell generation, while NNE winds become increasingly dominant and rarely align with the beach. It can still be fun on smaller days, especially for longboarding, but this is not the time for a serious heavy-wave mission.
